The Cancer Council Tasmania advocates for public policies that will promote health and prevent disease on behalf of the Tasmanian community and people living with cancer. The organization maintains mutually beneficial partnerships with key clinical bodies including the National Breast Cancer Centre, the Department of Health and Human Services, the AMA, the Divisions of General Practice and various colleges. These relationships benefit Tasmanian cancer control and present opportunities to progress issues on cancer diagnosis and treatment. Much of the funds that they raise go to cancer research. Each February, Cancer Council Tasmania allocates funds received from public donations to a wide range of cutting edge cancer research in Tasmania. All research is assessed by experts in the field to ensure that projects with the best chance of success are supported. Peer-assessed research has led to major advances in their knowledge about cancer and this knowledge has led to improved treatments for cancer. The Cancer Council Tasmania is the largest independent funder of peer-assessed cancer research in Tasmania. This funding comes from generous public support through Australia's biggest morning tea and daffodil day, and memorial donations in lieu of flowers and bequests. The Cancer Council Tasmania was accepted as full UICC member in 1983.
