Cancer Council New South Wales (NSW) was established in 1955 by an act of the NSW Parliament. They are currently the leading cancer charity in NSW, with grants from NSW Health and the National Health and Medical Research Council for some specific projects. However, the bulk of their income is raised through fundraising events and donations from the community. This year, 2009 they have committed $8 million to new external research, comprising 16 Project Grants, 6 Innovator grants and 1 program grant in Pharmacogenomics and 6 Strategic Research Partnership Grants while also funding 40 clinical trials nurses located in hospitals throughout NSW. Each year the Cancer Council Connect service puts around 1000 cancer patients in touch with trained volunteers who have had a similar cancer diagnosis and treatment. They continue to make submissions or representations to government on a range of cancer-related issues including the availability of home-based care for cancer patients; nutrition and health claims on food labelling; and junk food advertising to children. Cancer Council NSW were accepted as full UICC member in 1962.
