B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital is a tertiary cancer care treatment facility, built by the act of parliament in 1953 in the name of people’s leader Mr. B.P. Koirala, with therapeutic as well as preventive wards in function. The hospital was built with assistance from the government of the Peoples’ Republic of China in the year 1998 and has been in service since then. Being in Chitwan has strategically placed the hospital in a central location in Nepal for easy access for cancer patients from all over the county. The hospital has been providing very essential services to cancer patients of Nepal for which they previously needed to travel to foreign countries before this facility was built in Chitwan. With a capacity of 450 in-patient beds, 8 operation rooms, 4 radiotherapy bunkers, a pathology block, a radiology block, and other ancillaries, the hospital is a ray of hope for cancer patients in Nepal. Estimates of cancer cases in Nepal are nearly 26,000 per year and the yearly mortality is about 18,000. This hospital caters services to about 10,000 patients per year which is half of this number. In 2019, 143,799 out-patients were seen, 8004 in-patients were admitted, 3,500 operations were performed, 3,002 radiotherapies were delivered and 2,562 chemotherapies (Annual Report 2019). Cancer treatment, like any other sub-specialty, is a very specialised subject in medicine. It requires a specially trained multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses and allied health personnel to deliver optimum care. This hospital has a benefit of manpower trained in different countries under one roof with substantial experience and unparalleled expertise to provide both theoretical as well as clinical knowledge on cancer care. So, our transformation to a teaching academy has tremendous hopes for the country to fill the existing gap of the much needed human resources in the field of oncology without the need of a huge investment in terms of manpower as well as infrastructure.
