“Equal Right to Life”
Our organization, Equal Right to Life, is a Russian non-governmental non-profitable organization aimed to assist in promotion of socially significant federal and regional target programs in the sphere of healthcare, primarily, cancer care and control, in the Russian Federation, to protect rights and lawful interests of Russian citizens, especially, patients and people with disabilities due to diseases, as well as to pursue social, charitable, cultural, educational and scientific purposes.
In particular, we actively support the implementation of the All-Russian Oncological Social Program which is intended to resolve the problems regarding prevention, diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases. This socially significant Program was initiated by eminent public and political figures, key opinion leaders in oncology, intellectuals and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
For the purposes to deploy the counter-measures against the threat produced by such chronic non-communicable disease as cancer, our organization conducts the following activities divided into 3 major groups:
1) Activities focused on patients:
• Patients’ Schools. This activity, started in 2008, is carried out by our organization together with patients, their relatives, physicians, and "Movement Against Cancer" (Russia). Patients’ Schools take form of a workshop for cancer patients and their relatives with participation of specialists of the leading medical cancer institutions, representatives of healthcare authorities, public organizations, psychologists and lawyers. These events include lectures of specialists, Q&A section, and are free for everyone. Since September 2011, Patients’ Schools have also been conducted in the format of webinar. We have conducted about 330 “Patients’ Schools” with total 7,350 attendees, in 29 Russian cities;
• "OncoPatrol" – is a program implemented by our organization across the whole country and aimed to improve access to diagnostics and treatment of cancer. The main idea of this program is to provide an opportunity to general public to undergo free screening for detection of different types of cancer, and by that, to bring the issue of early detection of malignant tumors and access to such procedures and the issue of cancer awareness among the population to the authorities. These programs take form of mass screening of population performed in different medical facilities or mobile screening stations and are free for all participants. (almost 19,000 people have been examined).
• Public opinion poll on the topic “Pharmaceutical Support to Oncological Patients in Russia” and “Clinical Examination and Early Diagnostics of Oncological Diseases” was conducted by our organization.
• Federal Hotline (toll-free) +7-800-200-2-200 has operated since spring of 2006. This hotline informs general public and cancer patients about the latest achievements in oncology, the possibilities of modern methods in the diagnostics and treatment of malignant tumors, and about organization of personal and extramural consultations. Almost 180,000 calls have been processed during the operation of the Hotline.
• Consulting and other activities - Patients' advocacy services. Foundation of a newspaper "Equal Right to Life” in September 2011 (5 issues published).
2) Activities focused on medical professionals:
• Educational programs for medical professionals We provide an opportunity to oncologists from various Russian cities to participate in seminars, conferences, educational workshop sessions (master classes), where the experts from Russian leading oncological sience centers share the latest experience in the diagnostics and treatment of malignant tumors. Master classes take form of trainings, certification courses, or postgraduate clinics. (more than 1,120 doctors have been trained)
• Patients' Registries – our organization forms and inputs data, analyses the results and uses it for developing and implementation of effective cancer control policies. These registries allow full evaluation of the accessibility and quality of diagnostic procedures and treatment of patients, as well as monitoring of treatment outcomes.
3) Charity:
• Our organization provides the following services to various medical facilities throughout Russia in a form of charity: maintenance of healthcare facilities; supply of modern medical and laboratorial equipment and medical products, e.g. biopsy guns, hospital beds, medical reagents and tests. The purpose of the project is to make the innovative technologies of diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases equally available for all citizens of the Russian Federation
• We actively support other NGOs in the healthcare sphere, including patients' organizations, by providing such NGOs with free-of-charge services and consultations and donations.
It is important to emphasize that we actively support all the efforts of the United Nations Organization (UN) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in the sphere of cancer prevention, care, and control.
