Improving Childhood Cancer Treatment in the Paediatric Oncology Unit

Led by the University Hospital of Ougadougou, the project consists of a comprehensive approach to improve early diagnosis and treatment of children with cancer in the country through public awareness, professional training and facility renovatiion.

Issues

  • Delayed consultations and/or late referrals due to lack of information and awareness
  • Late access to specialized care: difficulties in early and precise diagnosis, insufficient financial resources for the creation of supplementary assessments
  • Inadequate follow-up problem

Main Objectives of the Project

  • Improve access to care for children affected by cancer in Burkina Faso 
  • Ensure training for healthcare professionals (medical and paramedical) for better management of children affected by cancer
  • Inform and raise public awareness on childhood cancer and the necessity of early consultation and diagnosis
  • Improve precision in diagnosis in order to treat patients more effectively
  • Identify means and strategies for improved clinical and psychosocial care

Benefits of the Project

Public awareness and information activities:

  • Improved basic childhood cancer knowledge of medical staff, the authorities and the general public
  • Wider impact with political and sanitary authorities
  • Consultations, early with precise diagnosis and treatment

Training and early diagnosis:

  • Improvement of the technical equipment
  • Improved multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Operational research results led to improvements in the management of childhood cancer

Advocacy to support clinical and psychosocial care:

  • Improved awareness of the reality of cancer and the necessity for collective involvement
  • Development of continual initiatives

Long term objectives:

  • Improvement of childhood cancer care in Burkina Faso
  • Expand this care to the third University Hospital Centre situated in the second city of the country
