The human face of global cancer control

A photography project carried out by UICC and its member organisations

Header Paragraph
"A picture is worth a thousand words"

In August 2015, the Union for International Cancer Control launched a new photography project entitled 'The human face of global cancer control'. Its aim is to better showcase some of the work of UICC and its member organisations.

UICC has been working with photographer John Deer and reached out to members in the countries where he had upcoming travels planned. In the last few months this included Morocco, Norway, Greece and Turkey.

In Fes, Morocco, John took the opportunity to capture the great work of the Lalla Salma Foundation and the nearby university hospital. He then travelled all the way to northern Europe, to visit our Scandinavian friends at the Norwegian Cancer Society over three days, witnessing their work in advocacy, patient support, research and more.

The Hellenic Cancer Society in Athens, Greece also kindly welcomed being photographed, before John travelled to Istanbul to photograph the World Cancer Leaders' Summit and then visited two hospitals, facilitated by the Turkish Association for Cancer Research & Control (TACRC), where he was able to capture a variety of photos, giving an extensive overview of modern oncology centres.

UICC would like to thank the following organisations, who took part in the project and facilitated the work of our photographer:

Lalla Salma Foundation, Morocco

Lalla Salma Association Against Cancer was founded in 2005. The association is now called "Lalla Salma Foundation - Prevention and Treatment of Cancers." In less than three years since its founding, the Lalla Salma Foundation has mobilized efforts to raise public cancer awareness throughout Morocco, launched an ambitious building campaign, organized the first national cancer registry and linked arms with an array of international partners in the fight against cancer. Inspired by the vision and leadership of Her Royal Highness, Princess Lalla Salma, the non-governmental organization is already making significant inroads in improving the quality of cancer management and the ensuring that all Moroccan patients have access to a high standard of cancer care. Early detection projects in breast and cervical cancer are underway, and the Foundation oversees a program of tobacco control is partnership with the Ministry of Health and business and education leaders. In 2006 the Foundation became associate UICC member.
