HEALTH INEQUALITIES:
FATAL DETERMINANTS FOR CANCER PATIENTS
Monday, 24 January 2011: 16.30-19.00
European Parliament, Brussels, Room: PHS P7C050
Despite increased prosperity and overall improvements in health in the EU, health differences between and within countries persist and in some cases are increasing. Differences in life expectancy at birth between Member States reach up to 8 years for women and 14 years for men. The reasons behind these differences are complex and involve a wide range of factors from income, education, living and working conditions, health behaviours to access to health care.
Cancer does not know socioeconomic or educational barriers.
Every year 3.2 million Europeans are diagnosed with cancer, which is also the second most common cause of death in Europe (29% of deaths for men, 23% for women) – a figure that is expected to rise due to the aging European population. In fact, it has been predicted that 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women will be directly affected by cancer during the first 75 years of their lives. The most frequently occurring forms of the disease in Europe are breast, colorectal and lung cancers. Europe is currently characterised by worrying inequalities in cancer control and care, existing within, as well as between, Member States. For example, the risk of dying from cervical cancer is five times higher in the worst performing Member State than the best.
