Princess Dina highlights Jordan as cancer care success story

HRH Princess Dina Mired has highlighted the Kingdom as a model of success for cancer care and research in the region at an international congress that concluded on Saturday.

A delegation from the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) led by KHCF Director General HRH Princess Dina, participated in the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) congress in Shenzhen, China, which ended yesterday.

During the three-day conference, Princess Dina presented two speeches: One at the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit and another during an event organised by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the American Cancer Society, according to a KHCF statement received by The Jordan Times.

At the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit meeting, organised by the UICC in coordination with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the American Cancer Society, the World Economic Forum and the World Health Organisation, Princess Dina highlighted Jordan’s achievements in becoming a regional model of success in the fight against cancer.

In her presentation, Princess Dina outlined the steps that KHCF and its medical arm, the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC), have taken to involve all segments of society to achieve international recognition as a comprehensive cancer care centre for patients in the Kingdom and across the region, the statement said.

The KHCC has earned three international accreditations including one as a disease-specific cancer centre, making it the only centre in the developing world to carry such an honour, according to the statement.

Princess Dina underlined that the distinction could not have been achieved without the support from local, regional and international organisations, along with the cooperation of all sectors of Jordanian society, the statement added.

During the event organised by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the American Cancer Society, Princess Dina presented a speech in her role as honorary co-president of the "Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control in the Developing World", speaking about the task force’s work.

Princess Dina emphasised that many people who face cancer in developing countries do not have the opportunity to receive early detection and diagnosis, increasing the cancer mortality rates in the developing world.

Princess Dina called on the global community to join forces in combating cancer to save more lives through providing accessible and affordable cancer treatment.

Also during the conference, Dr Jamal Khader, head of genitourinary and lung service and Dr Feras Hawari, chief of pulmonary and critical care, and director of the cancer control office at the KHCC gave speeches on telesynergy and cancer among smoking patients, respectively.
