The documentary is available for download online to support your work at a national level, specifically on the area of access to medical opioids and palliative care globally.
In March 2009, two filmmakers from Melbourne, Australia learned of the global crisis in untreated pain. The knowledge that millions around the globe were not able to access essential medicines launched them on a journey to discover why and how this has happened. The result is the documentary project LIFE Before Death and the hope is that the attention the project brings to the issues of untreated pain and palliative care supports the ongoing work of project partners including the UICC’s Global Access to Pain Relief Initiative. The goal is meaningful change, specifically better access to medicinal opioids and palliative care globally.
LIFE Before Death is about the remarkable health professionals battling the sweeping epidemic of pain that threatens to condemn one in every ten of us to an agonising and shameful death. Their mission is to change the culture of medicine to become more focused on care, rather than exclusively on cure.
Through the eyes of patients and their families we discover the inherent humanity that empowers the best of us to care for those beyond cure. We uncover hard truths about the torture occurring everyday in hospitals around the world but also of the immense hope that comes from those health care pioneers brave enough to accompany terminal patients on their inevitable journeys to gratifying end-of-life experiences filled with dignity, love and peace. This is the story of living well and dying better, making the most of every moment in our life before death.
