Translating the Declaration
The World Cancer Declaration is now available in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
UICC encourages member organisations to translate the Declaration in their native language if not otherwise listed to ensure that the call to action is promoted and disseminated as widely as possible. If your organisation is interested in developing a translation of the Declaration, please follow these simple guidelines.
A good translation is not necessarily a direct translation
Although it is important to translate the document as closely as possible to the original version, it is also important to ensure that language and technical content be adapted to accurately reflect local language grammar, vocabulary and idiomatic expression.
Establish a working group of linguists and technical experts
As a technical document, a working group should be established comprised of, if possible, a professional translator with previous experience with technical translations and staff or colleagues with English fluency and technical expertise in cancer or public health.
Organise an external review group to ensure accuracy
Once the working group has developed a preliminary draft of the translation, invite a core group of external reviewers with English fluency and technical expertise to review and help “fine-tune” the final version. This core group should include key senior staff, patients/clients, senior management from other UICC organizations, and experts from the national ministry of health.
