Promoting the Declaration

The World Cancer Declaration is a tool to help bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of government leaders and health policymakers in order to significantly reduce the global cancer burden by 2020.

It represents a consensus between government officials, public health experts and cancer advocates from all continents that are committed to eliminating cancer as a major threat for future generations.

UICC encourages the development of local and national activities that support the achievement of the Declaration’s 11 targets and Action Plan. Here are some examples of how individuals and organizations can promote the Declaration.

Encourage individuals and organisations to sign the Declaration

Signing the Declaration is an important symbol that shows the world's leaders that the global cancer community stands united behind this urgent call for action to develop policies and increase funding for cancer research, prevention, treatment and palliative care. Signatures are being collected here on the UICC website, but can also be collected through your organization’s website or by hand-signature.

Encourage local and national media coverage on the Declaration

Keep local media informed by sending timely information and press releases on the Declaration and Declaration-related activities you are implementing to further the targets. Develop contacts with print and T.V. health reporters and editors. Host media events at your organization that tie in your work at the local level with the global Declaration activities.

Establish partnerships to further the Declaration

UICC encourages individuals and organizations to establish partnerships and develop joint activities dedicated to furthering the Declaration's targets and Action Plan.

Develop e-advocacy campaigns focused on the Declaration

E-advocacy campaigns can help quickly spread knowledge and understanding of the Declaration and its goals to a larger audience. UICC encourages individuals and organizations to solicit support for the Declaration by developing blogs, local websites, using social networking sites such as facebook and linkedin and by joining UICC’s Global Cancer Control Community – our virtual network of cancer control professionals and volunteers.

Develop translations of the Declaration in your native language

In order to ensure global impact, UICC aims to have the Declaration translated and promoted in as many languages as possible. Translations are currently available in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish, Korean and Chinese. If the Declaration is not currently available in your native language and you wish to provide a translation, guidelines on proper translation techniques and review procedures are available online and in PDF format.

Develop national adaptations of the Declaration

National adaptations of the Declaration’s 2020 Targets and Action Plan are crucial to ensure that the global movement includes special consideration of national cancer contexts. UICC actively encourages its member organizations and partners to collaborate with national/local government leaders and health policy experts to develop and approve adapted versions of the Declaration’s targets for each country and provide information on activities and progress to support global monitoring and evaluation efforts.
