Caring for Cancer

Local youth work to increase cancer awareness and education while supporting those fighting the disease.

On February 19th from 10 AM till 2 PM the IGESL Youth Action Council is inviting the community to attend a Caring for Cancer Day. Many activities will be held in the library of the old Neshaminy Middle School across from St. Mary’s Medical Center in Langhorne, PA. Some of these activities include making hats, blankets, and books all to benefit local patients battling cancer. In addition, St. Mary’s staff and the American Cancer Society will be providing information on prevention, detection, and treatment.
This event is sponsored by the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning’s Youth Action Council in partnership with St. Mary’s Medical Center. The Youth Action Council, comprised of Middle and High School students, promotes youth-directed community engagement through a service learning framework.
After researching information about cancer, the youth discovered that 565,000 Americans die each year from cancer and another 1.5 million are diagnosed. 30,000 of those 565,000 come from Pennsylvania with Bucks County ranking third in the number of deaths. After learning how research suggests at least 150,000 of these deaths could be avoided with early detection and prevention, the young people ages 12-16 decided to do something to get this information to their family, friends, and neighbors.
One of the youth stated "Kids don't have money to donate to research for a cure, but we can do something to help people who are suffering and teach others what they should know."
