CANSA - South Africa - World Cancer Day

In the build-up to World Cancer Day, prominent figures have signed the World Cancer Declaration.

On 4th February, CANSA will hold a morning breakfast with one of their new sponsors and a corporate golf event afterwards at a prestigious gold club.

Grassroots activities will also be organised.

We have launched the declaration as our campaign tomorrow and continues right up until end June, beginning July.  Although CANSA pledged to collect 500 signatures, we’ve challenged our staff and volunteers to aim higher and our goal is now to target over 10 000 signatures.

We have  a range of activities planned on the day  which is vast.  All regions are actively involved in collecting signatures, spreading the cancer message and educating about how to reduce the cancer risk and raising awareness of the global cancer burden.  Country-wide in South Africa, CANSA activities range from:
•    Screenings with our mobile health units (pap smears, self-breast examinations, PSA’s, skin examinations)
•    Health talks and workshops on cancer
•    Support group gatherings
•    Marches and walks by volunteers, staff and local community to highlight World Cancer Day
•    Visits to local hospitals and oncology centres collecting signatures
•    Events with cancer survivors giving their testimonies as well as cancer education regarding our current campaign, SunSmart.  We’re in the summer months here and reminding all to play safe in the sun and the dangers of skin cancer.

In terms of local media attention, this week has seen TV and radio interviews with cancer survivors and CANSA spokespeople as well as coverage already in local print and on-line media.  We’re also utilising our social media platforms to spread the word and collect signatures.  Below is an electronic mailer that will be sent to our database of partners, supporters and volunteers.  CANSA Head Office is hosting a media breakfast on the morning of World Cancer Day to advocate the support of the media, national and local government and health officials and get them to sign the declaration.
