The Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society (ACTSS) Pet Cancer Month February 2011

Do you know that pets get many of the same cancers that their human counterparts do? Do you know that many of them can be treated? Go to www.actss.ca

The Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society (ACTSS) is a registered Canadian charity that educates pet owners and the veterinary community on the benefits of early cancer diagnosis and the available treatments of cancers in our pets. ACTSS also subsidizes the cost of veterinary cancer expenses in pets that are residents of Alberta Canada.

Imagine that a beloved family member, your pet, has been diagnosed with cancer. This is devastating, heartbreaking and terrifying news. Now imagine there is a treatment, even a cure, that can save your pet’s life….but you cannot afford it. Sadly many Albertans are faced with this difficult dilemma each year. But there is hope!

The Animal Cancer Therapy Subsidization Society (ACTSS) is a not-for-profit society dedicated to bringing affordable modern veterinary cancer treatment to veterinary cancer patients. Through our programs we provide subsidies to dedicated pet owners as well as educate animal owners and veterinarians on the availability, uses and benefits of advanced cancer therapies in the treatment of veterinary cancers. We feel no owner should have to end their pet’s life simply by not being able to afford cancer treatment.

Our goals are:
• To subsidize the cost of cancer therapies for pets.
• To subsidize the education of a select number of Canadian veterinarians in the specialty of veterinary
oncology.
• To continually expand ACTSS' network of association, thereby offering ever greater numbers of
people and pets the opportunity to benefit from its program.
• To provide education for veterinarians, animal health technologists and the pet owning public
regarding the availability, uses and benefits of advanced cancer therapies.

Someone said to me recently, “I didn’t know pets could get cancer”. Sadly, pets can get most illnesses that humans can get. And just like humans, the cancer journey can be frightening and extremely stressful. No life should be cut short, just because someone cannot afford treatment.
